TIAGRA

The definition of art is the expression or application of a human creative skill, typically in the visual form and producing works appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. As an art lover, Tia quickly discovered the beauty in human movement. Whether it was sculpting her own body or flowing through a yoga sequence, there was no doubt in her mind that a workout provides emotional and physical release.

Soon, Tia’s passion for the body and its capabilities shifted from very personal into a more shared journey. With hopes of teaching others about the life-changing benefits of movement, Tiagra went on to become a certified personal trainer as well as yoga teacher. Teacher training taught her to find comfort in the uncomfortable, and this philosophy is what she aims to share with her clients.

No matter the size of the goals, growth only happens when you allow yourself to push into the unknown — despite fear. Whether you’re on your mat or lifting weights, Tiagra takes a positive approach to coaching her clients, allowing them to calm the mind, conquer discomfort, and find home in their bodies.

HOW TRIBE BEGAN: MARIA’S STORY

I moved from Hong Kong to Vancouver a year-old baby. Like all Chinese kids, honour roll status was a must. The only in my grad class to score 100% on the English provincial, I went straight to UBC and left with a Bachelor’s in philosophy. My argumentative skills were honed to a fine science, but I had no idea for what.

I soon became horrifically aware of how ill-equipped my Arts degree had rendered me for financial security. I could debate and analyze, but finding a position I could start a career in and be fulfilled by? I bounced from job to job to no avail.

A few years later I bit the bullet and enrolled in a documentation specialist program at BCIT. Midway through, I landed a job as a technical editor. I’d always enjoyed editing anyway. I was set!

Reality check. I spent 9 to 12 hours a day stuck behind a desk beyond stressed. “Sedentary” is defined as sitting — to me it meant a slow death. Imprisoned in a chair, bones deforming, leaving work exhausted yet unfulfilled. Three more decades of this?

Thankfully for my waistline, my happy hours were spent cradling dumbbells, not beers. My therapy for the ridiculous deadlines was the gym. Training alleviated my repetitive strain and hip misalignment injuries. My workouts were immensely healing.

I knew I wasn’t the only one whose body was prematurely aging thanks to modern day demands. How could I help others?

I decided to switch industries to health and fitness, and ended my editing career immediately after earning my PT certification. Leaving a stable salary, job security… to start a business from scratch in a foreign industry known for high turnover? My poor mom was worried sick! But what I switched to was just too necessary in today’s age of dis-ease.

I promised myself I WOULD NEVER HAVE A BOSS AGAIN.

This was the first of my life’s two most important vows.

Now I will dedicate my life to bettering others so they can become their BEST VERSION by strengthening the body, mind, and spirit through positive challenge, nourishing food, and belief in the seemingly impossible.

I made the exhilarating (albeit terrifying) decision to leap into the entrepreneurial fray in the summer of 2014, and Tribe Fitness was born in December.

I’ve since helped hundreds of clients lose up to 100+ pounds and reverse an “Obese” body fat % to within the “fit and healthy” range. Alleviated chronic back issues that make things painful. Helped clients achieve a body that they can feel proud of.

I’ve repeatedly witnessed the spark ignite in those who believe themselves beyond hope but are then proven WRONG.fitness trainer richmond

MY VEGAN TALE

In September 2015, I met a man who would become my catalyst for change. I’d already cut out meat from my cooking years ago, but I still subscribed to the “clean protein” myth of fish and eggs. Some days I’d eat 4! The questions he posed on social media resonated with my heart. I’d always believed in karma – I’ve witnessed it at work in my own life many times. What we eat literally makes us who we are. And I was fuelling my body with the suffering of animals!

I then made my second vow: I WILL RESPECT ALL LIFE AND MINIMIZE THE HARM I DO

Switching to vegan was literally one of my best decisions EVER.

For the first two months, the word that kept popping up was BUOYANT – I felt weightless. A beautiful light was shining on everything. I felt at peace and joyful like never before.

My immune system has been superhuman ever since. No inflammation anywhere. Everything runs like clockwork: digestion, menstrual cycle, mental clarity, emotional wellbeing. My recovery from training is lightning quick. Injuries take a fraction of the time to heal. When I sprained my ankle I was back on the treadmill in 3 days! It was like I unlocked a new level of physical, emotional, and spiritual alignment.

Now I help people transition to mindful health-conscious eating. Clients who’ve made the switch all tell me they feel lighter, healthier, and stronger!

“Maria is very goal-oriented and passionate about what she does.” – Lorraine
